Short Costa Rica Demographics Riview
The estimated population of Costa Rica in 2010 is 4,563,539 2,314,293 inhabitants,
Men and 2,249,246 women.
Most of this population is concentrated in areas of San José, Alajuela, Cartago and
Heredia, with about two-thirds of the total population.
The growth rate of the Costa Rican population has declined from 2.3% in 1999 to
1.15% in 2010. This led to an aging population, as population pyramids show the following:

2020, so that the aging population will be more pronounced in the

The main causes of population mortality in 2009 were:
- Acute myocardial infarction: 1440 deaths (twice as many men as women)
- Malignant neoplasm of stomach: 570 dead
- The other undetermined causes: 476 dead
- Chronic ischemic heart: 409 dead
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease with acute. 325 dead
These causes of death accounted for 17% of all deaths in 2009.
